Shillong to be home of India's first online gaming 'Centre of Excellence' - Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar announced on Friday that India's first "Centre of Excellence" for online gaming will be established in Shillong by March of this year. This news comes after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology recently circulated draft amendments to the IT Rules, 2021 for public consultation, which pertains to online gaming. The Centre of Excellence in Shillong is expected to catalyze startups and entrepreneurs from India's northeast region to build the next generation of the online gaming ecosystem.

The Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, stated that "it is the vision of PM Narendra Modi that the next wave of startups and entrepreneurs must come from Shillong, Kohima and other parts of the northeast."

The Minister also highlighted the importance of digital skills in a post-pandemic world. With the rate of digitalization of products, services, and devices continuing to increase across the world, the need for digital skills has become more pressing than ever. By providing digital skills training to the youth in the northeast region, the government hopes to empower them to take advantage of the opportunities that the fast-expanding digital economy presents.

To support this goal, MeitY will also set up a state-of-the-art facility under the National Institute of Electronics and IT (NIELIT) in Shillong to provide training on digital skills. A 10-acre campus will soon be ready for this purpose, catering to the skilling requirements of the youth in the northeast region.

The Minister also informed that the government was re-launching Skill India through PMKVY 4.0, which will train around 50,000 youths in Meghalaya in future-ready skills with industry-backed job opportunities. The Skill India program aims to create a highly skilled workforce that can meet the demands of the fast-growing economy.

In addition to the Skill India program, the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship has set a target to train nearly 60,000 youths in Tripura and 35,000 in Nagaland across a spectrum of approved courses. This is a significant step towards creating a skilled workforce in the northeast region that can take advantage of the opportunities presented by the digital economy.

In conclusion, the government's announcement of the establishment of India's first "Centre of Excellence" for online gaming in Shillong is a positive step towards fostering the development of the region and providing opportunities for young people to explore their passion for gaming and entrepreneurship. The establishment of a state-of-the-art facility to provide digital skills training and the re-launch of the Skill India program will also help to empower the youth of the region to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the fast-expanding digital economy.
